Ranthambore previously known as Ranastambha or Ranastambhapura. Prithvi Raj Chauhan I was the ruler of Ranthambore in the 12th century who was very close to Jainism. Later Rana Hamir Singh of Mewar captured it rule over 1326-1364 AD and Rana Kumbha over 1433–1468 AD. During the reign of Rana Udai Singh, fortress passed to HADA Rajputs of Bundi.
Later Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat and Mughal Emperor Akbar captured it. The fortress passed to the Kachwaha Maharajas of Jaipur in the 17th century, and it remained part of Jaipur state until Indian Independence.
